A Day of Nature, Innovation and Discovery

This promises to be a fascinating and inspiring day, bringing together people with a shared interest in understanding, recording and protecting our natural environment. Highlights include an exciting mix of expert speakers talking about citizen science, wildlife recording, new technology and practical approaches – a packed and thought-provoking programme.

Here’s a look at the programme for the day (click highlighted names to learn more about our speakers):

  • 10:00 am – Welcome and introductions, Sam Neal: introduces the conference, provides context, and gives an overview of the programme before introducing our conference chair, Rowena Langston.
  • 10:15 am – Keynote speaker Professor Bill Sutherland: “Exciting opportunities and scary elements”
  • 10:45 am – Jen Burlingham: The LNRS ambition and monitoring

11:05 am – Break

  • 11:15 am – Nick Marriner, Chilterns National Landscape: Tracking the impact – developing surveying capacity
  • 11.35 am – Mark Bowler: Scaling Citizen Science – Accessible Monitoring technology and AI in Biodiversity Recording
  • 11.55 am – James Heywood: Citizen science – using structured surveys for local understanding
  • 12:15 pm – Mark Blaxter, Darwin Tree of Life: DNA and what it can tell us about our natural world

12:45 pm – Lunch: Take a well-earned break, meet other attendees and visit our stalls and book tables.*

  • 1:30 pm – Philip Farndon: Advances in thermal imaging
  • 1:50 pm – Carlos Abrahams: Bioacoustics – listen and learn
  • 2:10 pm – Robin Hutchinson: iRecord
  • 2:30 pm – Graeme Lyons: Pan-species listing

3pm – Break

  • 3:10 pm – Discussions, panel questions and answers, chaired by Rowena Langston: exploring some of the themes raised throughout the day.
  • 3:30 pm – Summing up the day, Rowena Langston: bringing together the key ideas and themes from the conference.
  • 4:00 pm – Close

Stalls and book tables: Alongside the programme, there will be plenty to browse and discover, with stalls from NNNS, SNS, Jen Burlingham and the Norfolk & Suffolk LNRS. Tables will also feature books by Graeme Lyons and Sarah Whild, with copies available to purchase.

*Complimentary tea and coffee will be provided, but you will need to make your own arrangements for lunch.
